We like to keep you up-to-date on what happens at your PAC meetings, whether you are able to make it out or not. Here are the minutes from our meeting on Wednesday, September 12th.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWhat is the Parent Advisory Council?<\/b><\/div>\n
\nPAC’s MISSION<\/div>\n
\n1. To promote communication, involvement and belonging between the school, families and<\/div>\n
\ncommunity.<\/div>\n
\n2. To provide supplementary resources to the school through fund\u2010raising.<\/div>\n
\n3. To provide a forum for discussion, presentation, recommendations, goal\u2010setting and visioning.<\/div>\n
\nAlso important to forge a relationship with the Teachers of the school.<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nItem 2: Elections: secretary<\/b><\/div>\n
\n\u2022 Coral Forbes nominated by Mercedes Calvert<\/div>\n
\nOutcome: Coral Forbes Secretary \u2010 all in favor<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nItem 3: Acceptance of the agenda<\/b><\/div>\n
\nOutcome: Rachel Cooper added, agenda accepted<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nItem 4: Kate Longpre\u2010 Vic West Community Centre<\/b><\/div>\n
\n\u2022 Kate is the Manager at the Vic West Community Center<\/div>\n
\n\u2022 She is offering a new preschool program as well as out of school care with the Boys & Girls Club<\/div>\n
\n\u2022 Good Food Boxes can now be picked up at the community center every 2 weeks<\/div>\n
\n\u2022 Corn Roast this Sunday 12\u20104pm (where there \u201cmay be\u201d a Flash Mob!) and Open House 9\u20104pm (includes a screening of the documentary \u201cBrain to Being\u201d)<\/div>\n
\n\u2022 Shaw exo wifi and computer station now available<\/div>\n
\n\u2022 Check out the Fall program guide<\/div>\n
\n\u2022 Looking forward to working closely with the PAC and school<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nItem 5: Principal Report<\/b><\/div>\n
\n\u2022 School Growth Plan has been completed and needs approval from a Teacher as well as three PAC members and then will be posted on the website<\/div>\n
\n\u2022 PAC meetings must end at 8:15pm so that the Janitor can lock the building<\/div>\n
\n\u2022 Number of students last year was 173, this year we have 186 students<\/div>\n
\n\u2022 Appreciates the parents\u2019 patience during the first week of school. It was touch and go as to whether we would receive a new teacher.<\/div>\n
\n\u2022 The school will have a Learning Assistant for an additional 40% this year. But there will be 7 less Educational Assistants because of the funding formula based on the children\u2019s designations. To ensure that every child is supported, the administration is hoping to increase the number of working hours for the EAs but not necessarily the number of staff.<\/div>\n
\n\u2022 There will be some upcoming changes to the educational system based on how children learn.<\/div>\n
\n\u2022 The reputation of Vic West Elementary is changing for the better. Mr. Cardle asks the teachers, \u201cIn what way can you impact your students?\u201d and to the kids, \u201cHow are you going to make your school the best?\u201d<\/div>\n
\nAction item: Mercedes, Coral & Aaren to sign off on School Growth Plan<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nItem 6: Rachel Cooper: School Meal Assistant\/Lunch Lady<\/b><\/div>\n
\n\u2022 Will be heading up a new recycling program at the school including plastics, compostables, etc.<\/div>\n
\n\u2022 Needs staff support, Green Team of students (possibly Lunch Monitors with helpers), and parents to help educate the children<\/div>\n
\n\u2022 Will provide posters, can the PAC provide incentives for the students that help?<\/div>\n
\nAction item: PAC will fund appropriate rewards for Green Team<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nItem 7: Executive Reports<\/b><\/div>\n
\nVisioning meeting in early October (Mercedes)<\/div>\n
\n\u2022 Need to think about where we are going as a school (roadmap)<\/div>\n
\n\u2022 Prepare a Wish List in case money is donated<\/div>\n
\n\u2022 October 3rd proposed as Visioning meeting date (location TBA)<\/div>\n
\n\u2022 Details will be posted on our website www.vicwestpac.com<\/a> and facebook<\/a> and there will be an open invitation to parents who are interested in attending (would like a parent email list)<\/div>\n
\n\u2022 Once ideas have been formed, we will connect with Teachers and Administration for input<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n

\n\u2022 We will be receiving the gaming grant at the end of the month (~$20\/student)<\/div>\n
\n\u2022 PAC discussed whether to keep these commitments or make changes\u2026.<\/div>\n
\nOutcome: PAC will continue to pay for the above commitments \u2010 all in favor<\/div>\n
\nAction item: President will give a letter to the Teachers explaining that we will provide the Consumables amount now but will wait for the grant to be deposited before giving out the fieldtrip money. We would also appreciate knowing where the kids went for their fieldtrips.<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nReview upcoming Events\/Fundraisers \u2010 Volunteers to sign up<\/b><\/div>\n
\n\u2022 Return It Recycling (all year) \u2013 Aaren and Coral (juice boxes & bottles) bi\u2010weekly removal of juice boxes & Bottle Drives; Rachel (recyclables other than returnables)<\/div>\n
\n\u2022 Scrap Metal Drive (all year) \u2013 Aaren could use volunteers with trucks during the \u201cDrive\u201d. The Steel Pacific account is still open.<\/div>\n
\n\u2022 Thrifty\u2019s Smile Cards (all year) \u2013 Conan: account will be open again. We made ~$300 last year.<\/div>\n
\n\u2022 Entertainment Books (September) Jaime, Mercedes, Heather, Riley and Rhiannon will help this Friday<\/div>\n
\n\u2022 Scholastic Book Fairs (October & April) \u2013 Riley and Rhiannon will speak with Crystal<\/div>\n
\n\u2022 Movie Nights (October\/March) \u2013 Mercedes will look after the October Movie Night (date TBA)<\/div>\n
\n(Other events will be covered at October\u2019s meeting)<\/div>\n

\nItem 8: Business\/Action items arising from previous minutes:<\/b><\/div>\n
\nBall wall painting and Sutton Group visitation<\/i><\/div>\n
\nAction Item: Jamie will pick a date to paint the ball wall and ask for volunteers. Teachers will be asked to assist with teaching the kids the games. Perhaps a \u201cPAC Challenge\u201d?<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nYear end event review (Tracey)<\/i><\/div>\n
\n\u2022 The 2012 Year End Event cost ~$800 and ~$850 was collected<\/div>\n
\nPAC manual (Mercedes)<\/div>\n
\n\u2022 Conan and Mercedes will compile the documents into Google Doc (or Dropbox?)<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nFun Run (Coral)<\/i><\/div>\n
\n\u2022 Have enough kids to get the school name on the race shirts<\/div>\n
\n\u2022 Excited to have our school represented at the Victoria Marathon<\/div>\n
\nBasketball court repaving (Conan)<\/div>\n
\n\u2022 Paul Valentine Memorial fund<\/div>\n
\nAction item: Mr. Cardle will speak to the District and collect quotes<\/div>\n

\n\u2010 The bottles and juice boxes will be collected and returned by Aaren & Coral this year.<\/div>\n
